This is a weird phenomena I’ve discussed with a number of people that feels so blatantly obvious it is baffling to me that it isn’t discussed more.

Plainly put, the environments of the most active, intimate conversation ‘just so happen’ to be those where the presence of a device is either impossible or highly inconvient.

  • Skiing
  • Sauna
  • Swimming
  • Hiking/Camping
  • Interval Sports

Any reader can easily recall several extremely positive interactions they have likely had in one of these settings and yearns for more alike it.

There is of course an easy rebuttal that these are all activities relating to fitness or health which I am sure is a relevant factor, though I refuse to believe it to be the predominant one.

The question then becomes – how do we scale this? ‘Phone in the basket’ practices feel awkward and unnatural, what is needed are more opportunities where inaccessibility of tech is a downstream result of a perceived benefit of the parent activity.
